Understanding Myeloma?
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that originates from plasma cells in the bone marrow. It primarily affects older adults and is often characterized by relapses, making it generally incurable. Historically, multiple myeloma was considered a terminal condition with an average survival rate of just four to five years.
Treatment Options Based on Disease Characteristics
The choice of treatment for multiple myeloma depends on several factors, including the aggressiveness of the relapse. If the cancer has progressed rapidly and caused significant damage in a short period, different strategies may be required. Additionally, the presence of specific mutations in myeloma cells can influence treatment efficacy, as some mutations might render existing medications less effective. Previous exposure to various drugs and the development of drug resistance also play a critical role in determining the most appropriate treatment plan.
Available Treatments for Relapsed Multiple Myeloma
In Singapore, multiple myeloma treatment options include a range of drugs such as proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory drugs, and monoclonal antibodies or immunoconjugates. For patients who have not previously undergone stem cell therapy, autologous stem cell transplantation is also a viable option. This procedure involves harvesting healthy stem cells from the patient’s own body, followed by a rigorous chemotherapy regimen, and then reintroducing the stem cells to aid in recovery. This treatment is typically recommended for patients under 70 years of age at the time of diagnosis. To achieve the best outcomes, the goal is to attain deep remission or minimize the presence of cancer cells as much as possible.
